Water Conservation Through Check Dams: A Success Story of District 3231A2

Water scarcity is a pressing issue in many villages of Maharashtra, leading to agricultural challenges and a shortage of drinking water and sanitation facilities. Recognizing the need for a solution, Lion Manish Ladage, the current FVDG (Elect) of  Lions International of Thane North, initiated a pilot project for constructing check dams in collaboration with District 3231A3 and the support of CSR funds. This endeavour has proven to be a significant success, resulting in multiple check dams being built in the region. Here’s how these check dams are conserving water and making a positive impact on the local communities.

 

Addressing Water Scarcity:

The check dams constructed by Lions International in collaboration with Rotary International are built on small streams that carry water during the rainy season. These streams tend to dry up after October, causing severe water scarcity in the region. By creating check dams, water storage capacity is enhanced, providing a reliable water source for the villages until February, March, or April. This water availability supports agricultural activities, sanitation needs, and other purposes, alleviating the hardships faced by the communities.

Advantages of Check Dams:

The construction of check dams offers numerous advantages to the local villages:

 

Extended Water Availability: With water stored in check dams, villagers can utilize it for agricultural purposes, enabling the cultivation of a second crop. Approximately 30 to 40 acres of land can benefit from a mid-sized check dam, providing a sustainable source of income for farmers.

Groundwater Recharge:

Check dams also contribute to the replenishment of groundwater levels in nearby areas. This leads to an increase in water availability in borewells, addressing drinking water needs in addition to irrigation.

Economic Stability: By allowing farmers to cultivate a second crop, the check dams prevent migration from villages in search of employment opportunities after the monsoon season. The additional income generated through these crops serves as a significant incentive for constructing check dams, as the return on investment is realized in less than two years.

Expanding Success and Social Impact:

The success of the check dam initiative has motivated more Lions Clubs to participate and secure CSR funds to support the construction of additional check dams. District 3231A2 has witnessed significant growth in this endeavour, with multiple check dams being completed and commissioned in various locations. To date, a total of 22 check dams have been built, covering 800 acres of cultivable land and benefiting around 450 farmers. These check dams provide direct benefits to approximately 2,000 people and indirect benefits to approximately 12,500 people. With an annual storage capacity of 7.5 lakh litres for a minimum of five to six months post-monsoon, these check dams have become crucial water resources for the region.

The check dam initiative undertaken by Lions Club, spearheaded by Lion Manish Ladage, has proven to be an effective solution for water conservation in Maharashtra. By providing water storage, enabling additional crops, and improving groundwater levels, these check dams have had a significant impact on the lives of villagers. With the continued success and growing participation in this initiative, District 3231A2 is leading the way in water conservation efforts. Through their dedication and collaborative efforts, Lions Club members are transforming communities and creating a sustainable future for generations to come.
